Nigeria Sees Improved Petrol Availability, Stronger Gas Supply In December 2025 – NMDPRA

Nigeria saw improved fuel availability and stronger gas supply in December 2025, according to the latest fact sheet released by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

The regulator said domestic supply of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), or petrol, rose to about 74 million litres per day in December, up from 71.5 million litres per day in November. Daily petrol consumption also increased to 63.7 million litres from 52.9 million litres a month earlier, a sign of improved nationwide availability.

Petrol stock sufficiency almost doubled over the period, rising from 16.65 days in November to 29.20 days in December, providing a stronger buffer against shortages and supply disruptions.

The report also pointed to significant gains in the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) market, widely used for household cooking. Average daily LPG supply stood at 5,201 metric tonnes, exceeding average daily consumption of 4,380 metric tonnes, indicating a supply surplus. Retail LPG prices, however, varied across the country, ranging from ₦1,120 to ₦1,600 per kilogram.

Monthly data showed LPG availability of about 5.2 million metric tonnes in December, with domestic production accounting for more than 70% of supply and imports contributing less than 30%, highlighting Nigeria’s growing reliance on local gas processing plants and refineries.

Gas processing facilities recorded mixed performance. Nigeria LNG (NLNG) Trains 1–6 operated at 82.67% of installed capacity, while the Gbaran-Ubie Gas Plant posted 86.36% utilisation. Soku Gas Plant exceeded nameplate capacity, operating at 105.69%, while Escravos and Obite gas plants lagged at 38.71% and 53.15% respectively.

Total average daily gas supply in December stood at 4.787 billion standard cubic feet per day (Bscf/d). Of this, 2.912 Bscf/d was supplied to NLNG, while 1.875 Bscf/d went to the domestic market. Gas-to-power remained the largest domestic consumer at 0.586 Bscf/d, followed by commercial users and gas-based industries.

Gas exports remained robust, with NLNG exporting 113,236 cubic metres of LNG per day, equivalent to 51,106 metric tonnes, alongside 0.124 Bscf/d exported through the West African Gas Pipeline.
