Environment Minister Urges Urgent Efforts To Combat Desertification, Land Degradation

Nigeria's Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, addressing stakeholders at the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) held in Riyadh

The Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, has called for an urgent global collaborative effort to combat desertification and land degradation.

The minister made the call while addressing stakeholders at the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) which held in December 2024 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Speaking during the conference, the minister shared strategies which can be develop towards achieving land degradation neutrality.

He emphasized the urgent need for collaborative efforts to combat desertification and land degradation, highlighting the impact of these issues on food security and climate change.

Balarabe also used the forum to call for increased investment in sustainable land management practices, while underscoring the importance of empowering local communities to participate in decision-making processes.

The UNCCD brought together representatives from various countries, including Nigeria, to share best practices and develop strategies for achieving land degradation neutrality.
