FG, Geosciences Society To Partner On Sustainable Environmental Solutions

Minister of State for Environment Dr. Iziaq Salako has stated the ministry’s readiness to partner with the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society in providing lasting solutions to the environmental issues in Nigeria.

The Minister who stated that environment drives our health, emphasized that environment is everything that determines our livelihood and existence.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society led by its President Prof. Akinade Olatunji in his office in Abuja, Salako revealed that part of the Ministry’s strategies is to strengthen the Planning, Research and Statistics Department (PRS) to conduct research on issues affecting the environment.
“We need strategy and evidenced base solutions to sensitize and educate our populace on the issues of the environment such as flooding, pollution and erosion control, land degradation, logging of trees and climate change,” he said.

“We need to promote planting of trees, protect our forest against unlawful logging of trees, protect our wildlife and ecosystem”, the Minister added, while assuring Prof. Olatunji and his team of the ministry’s readiness to partner and collaborate with the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society in providing lasting solutions to the environmental issues in the country.

In his remarks, the President of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society, Prof. Akinade Olatunji stated that his organisation is always ready to collaborate with the ministry and assist in achieving the ministry’s co-mandates of the performance bond signed with President Bola Tinubu.

According to Prof. Olatunji, Nigeria needs a holistic approach, and not a cosmetic one, to solving environmental challenges, emphasizing that his organisation is always ready to provide an enabling environment through its partnership and collaboration with the ministry.

He also used the opportunity to inform and invite the Minister to the organisations forth coming 59th Annual International Conference and Exhibition holding in Jos next month, and its 39th International Conference on Environmental Geochemistry and Health, scheduled to hold in Abuja in July this year.
