FG Throws Weight Behind Eradicating Use Of Plastic Waste

The Minister of State for Environment, Dr. Iziaq Salako, has given assurance of the Ministry’s support for the launch of Nigeria National Plastic Action Partnership Road Map (NNPAP).

The Minister stated this while receiving the NNPAP delegation led by Mr. Clem Ugorji and his team in Abuja for an update on the official launch of National Action Roadmap on NNPAP.

Dr. Salako urged the NNPAP team to ensure that the roadmap is in line with the Circular Economy Policy on Management of Plastic waste in the Country.

Salako reiterated that the ban on the single plastic usage in government establishments was aimed at addressing the menace of plastic waste.

In his remarks, leader of the delegation, Clem Ugorji, said their visit was to seek support for the upcoming launch of the NNPAP National Action Roadmap.

Ugorji further disclosed that the collaboration with the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) is aimed at having adequate data of  plastic waste in the country to increase the control and dimensions through the involvement of relevant stakeholders in plastic waste management.

The Director of Pollution and Environmental Health Control, Federal Ministry of Environment, Usman Abubakar Bukani stated that Nigeria became a partner of Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP) in January, 2021, with the launch of the Nigeria National Plastic Action Partnership (NNPAP) held i May, 2023.

Bukani further stated that the NNPAP is a locally-led multi-stakeholder collaboration platform for translating commitments to address plastic pollution into concrete action.
