Spaces for Change (S4C), with support from Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), continued to implement the Just Energy Transition (JET) radio project as part of the project titled ‘From Exclusion to Inclusion in National Just Transition Plans,’ under the auspices of the Extractive Industry and Climate Change Governance Project.

Discussing the topic ‘Role of strategic alliances in just energy transition in Nigeria,’ on Ozisa FM, Owerri, Imo State, November 8th, 2022, the resource persons emphasized the need of forging strong relationships strategically to achieve desired impact, while also cautioning on the inherent risk of politicizing energy transition plans.

Ogechi Ikeh, Gender and Human Rights Advocate, SDG State Coordinator Women in Politics, and Udochukwu Chukwu, Executive Director, Citizens Platform and Convener Ordinary Citizens, who provided an in-depth discussion on the subject, challenged listeners to embrace the actual energy revolution and take action to learn about climate change since it impacts them.

The edition is intended to raise awareness of the necessity for CSOs, private sector, government agencies and public to form coalitions to strategically build the nation’s renewable energy infrastructure, taking into consideration access to communities presently lacking energy, particularly those in the oil rich states whose environments and traditional means of livelihoods have been devastated by oil production.

According to the guests, strategic alliances can create a system that will unleash tremendous potential, advance society and improve the economic lives of citizens. “For instance, a woman who sells ice blocks in her community can be empowered through solar energy; if she can use that access to run her business successfully, you have lifted her out of poverty. This highlights the importance of everyone working together to ensure that crucial aspects of our shared existence are protected,” the resource persons said.
