Transition To Renewable Energy In Nigeria: Purpose And Prospect

Guests at the November 1, 2022, edition of Just Energy Transition (JET) radio program on Osiza FM, Owerri, have reiterated the benefits of renewable energy which they unanimously agreed was a welcomed development towards a cleaner and safer source of energy in Nigeria.

The resource persons opined that energy transition would reduce environmental risks and ecological scarcities and aims for sustainable development without degrading the environment. They pointed out how climate change has taken a negative toll on our environment, citing an example with recent high incidents of flooding in different parts of Nigeria.

Discussing the topic ‘Purpose and Prospect of Transition to Renewable Energy in Nigeria,’ Chioma Ohaka, Program Manager, Christian Fellowship and Care Foundation, Chetachi Louis-Udeh Esq., Legal Officer S4C and Princess Anyanwu Esq., shared information on the energy transition plan ongoing in Nigeria, urging listeners to embrace and support the government to actualize this goal as projected by year 2060.

They underscored the imperative of addressing the current and future challenges of energy system to mitigate the effect of climate change, while emphasising the need for cleanup of the environment by oil exploration companies as a precondition for phasing out fossil fuel.
